Why it works

Most core training happens lying down or standing still; the windmill asks your abs to control a loaded side bend while your hips hinge and your shoulder stays locked overhead, all at the same time. That combination of rotation, lateral flexion, and shoulder stability under load is closer to how your trunk actually gets challenged in real life and sport than a straight-ahead crunch ever is. How to do it

  1. Push your hips back toward the side opposite the kettlebell as you begin to hinge.
  2. Keep the loaded arm vertical and locked as your torso tips toward the floor.
  3. Slide your free hand down your leg toward the floor, following your hip hinge rather than forcing a fold at the waist.
  4. Keep your eyes on the kettlebell throughout the entire descent.
  5. Reverse the movement by driving your hips back under you to stand tall again.
  6. Complete all reps on one side before switching the kettlebell to the other arm.

Form cues

Breathing: Take a breath and brace before you begin the hinge, breathing shallowly through the descent, then exhale as you drive back up to standing.

Common mistakes

Bending the elbow of the overhead arm as fatigue sets in.

Fix: Use a lighter kettlebell and stop the set the moment lockout starts to waver; a bent overhead arm under load is the main risk in this exercise.

Rounding or twisting the lower back instead of hinging cleanly at the hip.
