Palms-Up Barbell Wrist Curl Over A Bench

Why it works
Resting your forearms on the bench removes the elbow and shoulder from the equation, so the flexor muscles running along the underside of your forearm have to curl the bar entirely on their own. Those are the same muscles that keep a barbell from rolling out of your hands during a deadlift or a heavy row, so strengthening them directly with an isolated curl carries over to a firmer grip under load. Set up
- Sit on the end of a bench and rest your forearms on it, palms facing up.
- Grip a barbell with a shoulder-width, underhand grip, wrists hanging just past your knees.
- Let the bar roll down toward your fingertips at the bottom of the movement before starting.
How to do it
- Start with your wrists extended and the bar low, near your fingertips.
- Curl the bar upward by closing your fingers first, then flexing your wrists.
- Squeeze at the top of the curl, lifting as high as your wrist comfortably allows.
- Hold briefly at the top.

Fix: Slow the lift down, especially on the way up, so the flexors do the work instead of momentum.
How to program it
- As an isolated, lighter-load movement, two or three sessions a week is reasonable for most lifters, even during weeks with heavy pulling work.
- Ten to 15 reps for two or three sets suits this exercise well, since the forearm flexors respond better to higher rep ranges than to near-maximal loads.
- Place it at the end of a pulling session, after deadlifts, rows, or pull-ups, so it doesn't pre-fatigue your grip before those lifts.
