Why it works

A standing squat asks your legs to both move the weight and keep your whole body upright and balanced at the same time; a lot of the effort in a heavy barbell squat goes toward bracing, not just pushing. The lying machine removes that balance requirement by fixing your torso against a padded backrest and constraining the platform to a single track. That lets your legs put out more force specifically through the squat pattern, since none of it gets spent stabilizing a bar or your footing, which is why this machine can move real weight even for people newer to loaded leg training.

How to do it

  1. Bend your knees and let the platform travel toward you under control.
  2. Lower until your knees reach roughly a 90-degree bend, or as deep as you can go without your lower back lifting off the pad.
  3. Drive through your whole foot, not just your toes, to press the platform back away.
  4. Extend your knees and hips until your legs are straight, without locking your knees out hard.
  5. Pause briefly at the top before starting the next rep.
  6. Keep the same controlled pace on the way down as you use pressing back up.

Breathing: Inhale as you lower the platform toward your chest, exhale as you press it back away.

Common mistakes

Letting the hips and lower back round off the backrest at the bottom of the rep.

Fix: Stop the descent at the depth where your lower back can still stay flat, even if that means a shorter range than a full squat.

Locking the knees out hard at the top of every rep.

Fix: Stop just short of full lockout so the tension stays on your quads instead of resting on your joints.

Pushing only through the balls of the feet, which shifts strain onto the knees.

Fix: Press evenly through your whole foot, including your heel, on every rep.

Letting the knees drift inward as the weight gets heavier.

Fix: Cue your knees to track in line with your toes throughout the rep, and drop the weight if you can't hold that line.
