Knee Across The Body

Beginner Body Only Glutes

Knee across the body is a lying rotational stretch that reaches the glutes, the outer hip, and the lower back in one position. You bend one knee and let it fall across your torso toward the opposite side while your shoulders stay flat on the floor, which twists the hip and spine just enough to release tension without any equipment. It works well as a cooldown after lower body training or as a quick reset for a stiff lower back.

Why it works

Letting a bent knee drop across the midline pulls the hip into internal rotation and draws the pelvis and lumbar spine along with it. That combination lengthens the glute on the working side and puts a gentle rotational stretch through the lower back at the same time, which is why one position covers both areas rather than needing two separate stretches.

Set up

How to do it

  1. Keeping your bent knee at roughly 90 degrees, guide it across your body toward the floor on the opposite side.
  2. Let your hip rotate as the knee lowers, keeping the opposite shoulder pressed flat against the floor.
  3. Stop at the point where you feel a clear stretch through your glute, outer hip, or lower back.
  4. Hold that position, breathing steadily.
  5. Bring the knee back to center with control.
  6. Repeat on the other side.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as the knee lowers across your body, then breathe slowly through the hold.

Common mistakes

Lifting the opposite shoulder off the floor to let the knee drop further.

Fix: Keep that shoulder pinned down and treat the shoulder staying flat as your actual range limit, not the knee height.

Pulling the knee down with your hand to force a deeper stretch.

Fix: Let gravity do the work first; only add light hand pressure once the passive stretch already feels easy.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I hold the knee across the body stretch?

Around 20 to 30 seconds per side is enough, repeated for two or three rounds.

What does the knee across the body stretch work?

It reaches the glutes, the outer hip through the abductors, and the lower back, all through one rotational position.

Can I do this stretch every day?

Yes, it's a light static stretch, so it's safe to include daily as part of a warm-up or cooldown.

Why do I only feel this stretch in my lower back and not my glute?

Everyone rotates a little differently, so the emphasis shifts based on your hip mobility. If you want more glute and less lower back, try keeping the rotation smaller and more controlled.
