Why it works
Because you straddle the load instead of standing behind it, your hips sit lower and your knees travel further forward than they would on a barbell pull, and that shifts a good share of the lifting work onto your quadriceps instead of your hamstrings. Your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back still drive the hip extension that finishes the lift, while your traps and forearms fight to keep the handles from slipping as the frame shifts and settles under load. A car or a rigging frame doesn't behave like a fixed barbell. It can tip, twist, or swing slightly as you stand, so your whole trunk has to stay braced through the entire pull instead of just at lockout. That combination is what makes the car deadlift as much a stability and grip event as a leg drive.
Set up
- Position yourself straddling the car or loaded frame, feet roughly hip-width apart, with a handle or strap within reach on each side.
- Squat down until you can grab both handles with a flat back and your hips lower than your shoulders.
- Set your feet so the load sits centered between them, not pulling you toward one side before you even start.
- Take the slack out of the straps and brace your core before your hips move.
How to do it
- Drive your feet into the ground and push the floor away, letting your knees travel back as your hips rise.
- Keep the handles close to your body as you stand, rather than letting the load swing forward.
- Extend your hips and knees together until you're standing fully upright with the load hanging at arm's length.
- Pause for a moment at the top to control any swing or tip in the frame.
- Lower the load back down by bending your knees and hips together, keeping your back flat the whole way.
- Reset your grip and stance if the frame shifted before starting the next rep.
Form cues
- Push the floor away instead of yanking on the handles.
- Keep the load close to your shins and thighs on the way up.
- Brace your core before your hips start to move.
- Stand tall and pause before you lower back down.
Breathing: Take a full breath and brace your midsection before you break the load off the ground, then breathe out once you're standing fully upright.
Common mistakes
Letting the hips shoot up first while the load stays low, turning the pull into a stiff-legged yank on the lower back.
Fix: Push through your heels and let your hips and shoulders rise at the same rate, the way you would coming out of a squat.
Rounding the lower back to reach a handle that's set too low or too far to the side.
Fix: Adjust your stance or the handle height first. A rounded back under an unpredictable load isn't worth the extra reach.
Letting the frame swing forward at the top and yanking it back with the arms.
Fix: Control the last few inches of the lift and let your legs and hips settle the load, not your arms.
Loosening your grip between reps and losing tension in the forearms.

How to program it
- This is a maximal-effort pull against an unpredictable load, so treat it the way you'd treat a heavy deadlift session and give it a full week to recover before loading it again.
- Three to five short sets of three to five reps is plenty. Grip and bracing fatigue show up long before your legs do, so extra volume rarely buys you more strength here.
- Save it for early in a strongman-style session, right after your warm-up, since the odd shape of the load rewards a fresh mind more than fresh legs.
- If you don't have a car or a straddle frame, treat the rickshaw deadlift or a trap-bar pull as your regular training stand-in and keep this one for event practice.
