Why it works

Set up

How to do it

  1. Press the bar straight overhead using only your shoulders and arms, without dipping your knees or leaning back.
  2. Move your head slightly out of the way as the bar passes your face, then bring it back through once the bar clears.
  3. Lock your elbows out fully at the top, with the bar directly over your shoulders.
  4. Lower the bar back to your shoulders with control.
  5. Keep your core braced throughout to prevent your lower back from arching.
  6. Reset your brace between reps rather than resting fully.

Breathing: Take a breath and brace before each press, exhaling as the bar locks out overhead, then inhale as it lowers.

Common mistakes

Bending the knees slightly to help drive the bar up.

Fix: Keep your legs completely still throughout; if you need leg help, the weight is too heavy for a strict press.

Leaning back excessively to get the bar around the chin and face.

Fix: Move your head back slightly instead of leaning your whole torso, keeping the bar path close to vertical.

Letting the lower back arch to compensate for a weak core brace.

Fix: Squeeze your glutes and brace your abs before every rep; a stable trunk protects your lower back under the overhead load.
